Activities in and around Morokolo Safari Lodge

The Black Rhino Reserve forms part of the Greater Pilanesberg National Park measuring 57 000 hectares. Situated in the north western corner of the Pilanesberg National Park, The Black Rhino Reserve is just under 2 500 hectares in size and represents the first portion of private land incorporated into the Pilanesberg National Park. It is a private concession with its own entrance on the north-western side of the park.

Elephant, buffalo and a variety of antelope often roam in this area as they take shelter in remote areas not accessible to other visitors to Pilanesberg National Park. Characterised by a beautiful forest of Tamboti trees and occasional sightings of the bad tempered Black Rhino, the Black Rhino Reserve is home to the BIG 5 (Lion, Leopard, Buffalo, Elephant, White & Black Rhino) as well as a wide variety of antelope species (including Sable, Tsetsebe, Eland, Kudu and Springbok) and the rare sightings of wild dog.

With a species list of over 354, the Black Rhino Reserve is also a true "birders paradise".

On-site Activities

One professionally-guided Big 5 vehicle safaris (included in the room rates) each day will keep you in awe of the splendid natural beauty of the Black Rhino Reserve and the Pilanesberg National Park. Elephants, rhinos, lions, leopards, buffalo, wild dogs, kudus, wildebeest, warthogs and spring hares are but a few of the more commonly seen animals.

Walking safaris are available. The walk focuses on locating and observing the inhabitants of the Black Rhino Game Reserve from a different angle - on foot. Guests are accompanied by a qualified guide who will share his/her extensive knowledge and experience on both fauna and flora. Excursions depart in the early morning, or early afternoon..

Also to be noted is the use of bunkers and extensive water features - and at the 13th hole 38 crocodiles await. The par 72 course at the Gary Player Country Club is home to the annual Nedbank Golf Challenge and the tree lined course is a challenge to both novices and professionals. The pro-shop, putting green and health spa are open 7-days a week.

The best time to visit the Pilanesberg is from the middle of July to the middle of October (during late winter, spring or early summer). The reason for this is that animals take time to feed longer in the winter months, as there is less nutrition. The mating season which occurs from late February onwards is something worth seeing, as well. From January, however, viewing the dense bush proves to be an arduous task. In winter, the days are clear and warm.
The evenings tend to be very cold in comparison. In the winter time, some areas of the park have to be burned. This is known as a controlled fire, and it is necessary as part of veld management.

The winter months are, however, a great time to see some lions. They don’t take as much notice of tourists and cars as they would in another season.
Even though they don’t take as much notice, stay in your car at all times. The animals are used to vehicles, but if you leave the car you pose as a threat to them. Don’t hoot at the animals either, as they will get startled and run off. This will ruin your chances of getting a photo. This will scare them and give them cause to attack.

October to March (summer)

Rainfall is mostly common in the summer months, between October and March. During this time, the Pilanesberg sees about 622mm of rain. You can expect the summer temperatures to be between 26°C and 30°

  • Tight fitting sun hat, cap or beanie in Winter (it gets quite windy on an open safari vehicle), Light jacket (and fleece in Winter),
  • Lightweight cotton or linen shirts and shorts,
  • Tracksuit or warm longs, Closed shoes and socks, Comfortable open sandals
  • Camera, spare batteries and memory card, Binoculars, Mosquito repellent

Buffalo Thorn Lodge gets its name from the Buffalo Thorn tree (Ziziphus Mucronata) which is small to medium-sized.

It is colloquially known in Afrikaans as the ‘Blinkblaar Wag-‘n-Bietjie’. The ‘Blinkblaar’ refers to the shiny leaves while ‘Wag-‘n-Bietjie’ literally means ‘wait a while’ in English. Deriving its name from the paired and straight-hooked thorns which attach themselves mercilessly to passersby, it requires a lengthy amount of time to extricate oneself!

The Buffalo Thorn tree has many varied uses among different cultures and beliefs. The fruit can be used to make beer and it is rumoured that chewing the leaves serves as an aphrodisiac! Some believe that the tree is immune to lightning making it safe to shelter under during a thunderstorm, while the Zulu people believe the “z” shaped thorns protect graves and put souls to rest.
